MY THREE STRUMS

The three strums I use regularly are THE SWING STRUM, THE SHUFFLE STRUM, and THE RUMBA STRUM.

We will spend the most time learning the swing strum technique to create a danceable rhythm feel with the ukulele.  We will learn the damping technique that is essential to creating the swing rhythm.

Damping the strings is also important in the shuffle strum, which comes from the rhythm feel of the classic rhythm n' blues records of Louis Jordan, Wynonie Harris, up to and including Elvis Presley.

Last but not least the rumba strum is a bit more complex, but we break it down to three bite-sized morsels, and learn to count and play it together. It comes in handy with 1950's anthems like Save the Last Dance for Me, Three Cool Cats, Lonely Teardrops, and Under the Boardwalk.

Beg 2.0 Uke Class; Monkey Chords

Thursdays 11am pst June

(June 3. 10, 17) 11am pst Online

Description: Let me show you a simple, fun trick to learn your major chord shapes up the neck. No longer will you be stuck making the same chords in first position. Travel up to higher pitches whenever you feel like it to add spontaneity and color to your songs.

Song: No song, just simple patterns to memorize

Skills acquired: Learn 5 positions of every major chord up the neck along with a better understanding of your fretboard notes.

Prerequisites: It’s recommended that you know many of your first position chords and have a good understanding/muscle strength to play a Bb shape. We will be playing bar chords in this class, so you will be building muscle as well.

Fingerstyle: Here Comes the Sun

Mondays @ 11am & 6pm pst

(June 7, 14, 21) 11am & 6pm pst (same class both times) 3 week course

Description: Summertime is here! And now it’s time to explore some music that hails the sun! Here Comes the Sun is a fantastic way to learn how to strum a song while also adding the iconic riffs and melody lines that it’s so well known for. This is a somewhat easy song to learn. The chords are familiar to most players (G, A7, D7, C, Bb) and the melody lines we add will be single notes strung together, so no awkward motions that require holding down multiple strings. We will touch a little on reading rhythm so we can ace that intro!

Song: Here Comes the Sun

Skills acquired: Island Strum, Strum and pick together with ease

Prerequisites: Recommended that you read TAB at a comfortable level. It’s recommended to listen to the Beatles version of this song several times before class.
